Author's words: I admit, my relationship with Liptov is more than positive. I associate Liptov with many beautiful experiences. Carefree weekends with accommodation in Liptov, a pre-wedding stay at Liptov Castle. My husband and I even spent our first summer vacation after the birth of our son in Liptov. I simply enjoy Liptov and I prefer it to any other region of Slovakia. And do you know why? Liptov is picturesque. It is close to everywhere and the range of activities is rich. Do you like water, hiking, monuments? Do you just want to enjoy the "here and now" and admire the beautiful views? You can do all of that in Liptov. Whether it is nice or raining - there is always something to see and do in Liptov.

Mine 7 top cities, which are worth seeing in Liptov:

  1. Havránok Archaeological Open-Air Museum

On the banks of Liptovská Mara lie, until recently, undiscovered by tourists Havránok archaeological site from the Early Iron Age and the Early Roman period. Rare monuments were found at Havránek, documenting both ordinary and extraordinary life in a Celtic settlement. The exceptional fortified sanctuary, in which magical Celtic ceremonies were performed, is worth mentioning. You can also admire reconstructed residential buildings, a log courtyard, a pottery kiln and even a sacrificial site. During the season, cultural events are held in the Havránek area, which can bring the life of the mythical Celts even closer.

Interestingly, Havránok was later inhabited by Slavs, which is why you can also find other than Celtic monuments here, such as the remains and fortifications of a medieval castle with a moat and a defensive tower. It is definitely worth looking further down, to the banks of Liptovská Mara, where the original tower of a medieval church with a smaller exhibition on the history of the region is located.

For someone expecting a museum with lots of artifacts, Havránok may be a disappointment. However, this place is exceptional. It breathes the magical atmosphere of the Celtic Druids, which is worth experiencing at least once.

  1. Demänovská Cave of Freedom

This cave is not only the TOP attraction of Liptov, but without exaggeration it can be said that it is also the whole of Slovakia. With its colorful stalactite decoration, underground flow of Demänovka and charming lakes, it attracts many visitors not only from Slovakia every year. Approximately 1600 m of underground paths are accessible. On 6 levels you can enjoy views of cave domes and halls. Demänovská Cave of Freedom also has several of the most – is the largest cave system in Slovakia and also the most visited Slovak cave. When you are in Liptov, don't miss it.

  1. Articular Church of the Holy Cross

This Evangelical church is among the largest wooden buildings in Central Europe. The church in Svätý Kríž has a floor plan of 43 m and is in the shape of a cross. Almost 6000 people can fit inside. The interior with a wooden Baroque altar and a unique pulpit is charming. The wooden tower, which was added later and serves as a bell tower, forms a unique whole with the church. The church is truly beautiful and photogenic both inside and out.

  1. Bešeňová Water Park

When you think of Bešeňová, those born earlier will certainly imagine outdoor pools with brightly colored water and a lot of seniors... Today, thanks to its healing geothermal water, Bešeňová is an oasis of health, but also fun for the whole family. In the modern Bešeňová Water Park you will find 9 year-round pools, of which there are 4 with beneficial thermal water, which has positive effects on the musculoskeletal and respiratory systems. You will find a swimming pool, a relaxation pool and a pool with an aqua bar. Children and their parents will be delighted by the children's pool and also an entertainment tent, which, among other things, also brings a perfect experience with sea waves. Some water slides and slides can be enjoyed all year round.

Set aside at least 1 full day to stay in this water park. Everyone will have fun and relax here. If you get tired of the pools and water attractions, visit the Harmonia wellness & spa and maybe even experience an exceptional sauna ritual.

  1. Oblazy – Kvačianska Valley

Liptov is also a place of tourist destinations and walks. A breathtaking tourist stop is Oblazy in the Kvačianska valley in the Choč Mountains.

The hiking trail leads from the village of Kvačany in Liptov. It is easy and can be done even by children and non-athletes. Following the red trail (and later the blue trail) it takes approximately 1,5 hours with an elevation gain of 295 m. During the leisurely hike, stop several times and look around. The viewpoints, such as Malý Roháč, are beautiful. Probably the greatest experience of this hike is the Oblazy Water Mills, which await you at the end like an imaginary cherry on the cake. Oblazy is one of the last preserved technical monuments of its kind and still functional today. You can enjoy the exterior and, during opening hours, the interior.

If you have more time and a taste for hiking, combine a visit to Kvačianska Valley with Prosiecka Valley. Both Liptov valleys are beautiful and worth a visit.

  1. Jánska Valley and Liptovsky Ján

Liptovský Ján is a village with a rich occurrence of thermal springs and a starting point for entering the beautiful Jánská dolina. The place is ideal for cyclists and hikers, for seniors and families with children. Simply for everyone.

Mini Park Slovakia

The park of miniatures of selected Slovak monuments is set in a pleasant forest park. At a scale of 1:25, you can admire such monuments as Bojnice Castle, Strečno Castle or the Renaissance town hall in Levoča. More are gradually being added to the current 20 miniatures. The models are also faithful copies of their originals thanks to the materials used. A visit to the minipark can become an unusual addition to a day in Liptov.

Stanišovská cave

At the end of the Jánská Valley you will find the only cave open all year round, whose underground you will explore with a headlamp and experienced cavers. It is an experience for young and old.

Lookout tower

On a hill above Liptovský Ján stands a wooden lookout tower. The builders were inspired by traditional Slovak folk architecture when building it. The lookout tower is 10 m high and has 2 viewing platforms, from where you will have a beautiful view of the surrounding hills, nature, and villages.

If you're in these parts, be tempted by swimming. in Kadi – which is actually a crater connected to a natural pool with thermal water. The surroundings are beautiful, the water warm and healing. Perfect and unconventional relaxation and well-being. Especially if you find a time when it's just you and nature.

  1. Pavčina Lehota

The Liptov village of Pavčina Lehota has an attraction worth visiting. In winter, a ski resort, the rest of the year a FUN PARK. If you like adrenaline, a ride on the steepest bobsleigh track in Slovakia will be just right for you. The summer bobsleigh track in FUN PARK Žiarce has 16 turns, several terrain irregularities and wooden ramps that make riding on bobsleighs even more fun. You can enjoy the wind in your hair alone or with a child older than 7 years.

And if you are on your way from Pavčina Lehota, stop for a delicious meal and more fun at Demänová Resort on the outskirts of the village of Demänová. It is only 4 km and you will suddenly find yourself in a stylish newly built family resort, where adults can sit in a pleasant restaurant, taste specialties of Liptov cuisine, and children can have fun in the Fun Center with a cable car and Kids Zone - a large area full of climbing frames, swings and playgrounds.

Or would you prefer to sit by the lake with a view of the beauty of the surrounding nature? You can find that at Demänová Resort too. As well as quality accommodation, wellness services and everything that makes for an unforgettable holiday in Liptov.
