While the northern slopes invite you to deep karst valleys and mysterious cave systems, the main mountain ridge offers breathtaking panoramic views that stretch from the High Tatras to the southern mountains. If you are wondering which places to visit during your next vacation, this guide will make planning easier. We have selected locations that are perfect for recreational tourists, families with strollers, and experienced mountaineers.
If you are coming to this mountain region for the very first time, your natural base should be the northern, Liptov side of the mountains. Demänovská Valley is the main tourist center with the best developed infrastructure of services. This place is ideal for beginners because they can focus on easily accessible points with a high concentration of experiences right from the start. From the north side you have at your fingertips year-round cable cars, two accessible caves and safe, well-maintained sidewalks, so you can enjoy the mountains to the fullest even without previous experience with alpine terrain.
There are locations that you simply cannot miss when visiting central Slovakia, because they are true symbols of the region.

You can enjoy the unique panorama from a height of two thousand meters without having to undertake a tiring four-hour climb up a steep hill first thing in the morning. This route is safe, clear and can be easily managed even by smaller travelers.

In less than an hour and a half of gentle walking along the open ridge, you will reach the top of Lajštře, from where you will have fantastic views of the southern and northern sides of the mountain range without massive crowds.

The weather in the mountains can change in an hour. When thick fog and rain ruin your plans for ridge views, there’s no need to despair and stay cooped up in your room. The region offers some great indoor alternatives.
Is it true that winter closures of hiking trails do not apply in the Low Tatras? Yes, unlike the neighboring High Tatras, in the Low Tatras National Park (NAPANT) there is no general winter closure of high mountain trails. The ridge red main trail and accesses to mountain huts are open year-round. However, in the winter months you have to count on difficult conditions, ice and snow, when hiking crampons and poles are essential equipment.
Do I have to dress warmly for the Demänovská Cave of Freedom even during the summer? Definitely yes. The temperature in the underground Demänovská Cave of Freedom is stable all year round at around 6 to 7 °C. If you enter it in the summer in shorts and a T-shirt, you will quickly catch a cold during the almost hour-long tour. Long pants, sturdy shoes and a warm sweatshirt or jacket are a must.
Is it possible to go to Chopok with a stroller? Yes, the modern cable cars (Funitel) from the north side from Jasná are fully wheelchair accessible and the staff will gladly help you load your stroller. However, keep in mind that the rocky peak of Chopok itself (the last 10-15 minutes walk from the cable car) is made up of large granite boulders, which you cannot physically reach with a stroller. However, the views from the panoramic terrace at the Rotunda station are accessible without restrictions.
