Chopok is one of the most famous peaks of the Low Tatras and, with its 2,024 meters, the second highest after Ďumbiere. You can reach it from the north side directly from Demänovská dolina, where there is also a cable car from Jasná. So you can decide whether you enjoy the way up on your own, or take the cable car and enjoy hiking along the ridge. The total length is 6-9 kilometers, depending on the route.
There is a mountain hut on Chopok where you can refresh yourself, and there are also information boards about the local nature and geology. From the top of Chopok there are beautiful views in both directions of the ridge - towards Ďumbier and towards Dereše and Poľana.
Ďumbier could be described as the uncrowned king of the Low Tatras. With its 2,043 meters, it is not only the highest peak of the national park, but also one of the most beautiful destinations for alpine tourism. Its majestic shape rises above the surrounding landscape, so it will not surprise anyone that it is visible from many towns in Liptov and Horehronie. In addition to beautiful nature, it also offers an unmistakable feeling of freedom and peace that you can only experience in the mountains.
It is certainly worth mentioning that climbing Ďumbier is a real experience for all ages. Although the route is not technically demanding, it requires a certain level of physical fitness. At the top there is a distinctive summit cross and a view that one will not easily forget. On clear days you can see as far as the High Tatras, Poland or even Hungary.
Hiking in the Low Tatras offers one of the most popular hikes, which leads along the ridge from Chopok to Ďumbier. The route is well marked and easy, so even less experienced tourists will enjoy the trip. It is also suitable for families with older children or less able tourists who will use the cable car. However, you should expect a higher altitude and the associated change in weather. In addition to the physical challenge, it is also an aesthetic experience, the surrounding nature will enchant everyone. Along the way, you will meet not only tourists, but also chamois, marmots and other animals, which completely completes the scenery of picturesque nature.
The route also includes the famous MR Štefánik Cottage, the so-called cottage under Ďumbier, which provides shelter, refreshments and overnight accommodation. It is an ideal stop before climbing Ďumbier itself. This hike is one of those that combines adventure with comfort and enchanting views.
On the ridge between Chopok and Ďumbiere, one feels like on the roof of the world. On one side, the pointed peaks of the High Tatras loom in the distance, on the other, Kráľova hoľa spreads out. For many, such views are the main reason why they return to the Tatras repeatedly.
The most beautiful views are at sunrise or sunset – when the light turns the peaks orange and the valleys remain in soft shadow. Photographers, nature lovers and romantics will find a place here that will enchant them. Ridge hikes are rightfully among the most beautiful – the views are worth it.
If you are looking for a quieter, less touristy route, we recommend climbing Poludnica. This peak rises directly above the Demänovská Valley and its peak provides an unexpectedly wide, almost panoramic view. The route is of medium difficulty, taking you a total of 3-4 hours. As always, it is a good idea to have sturdy shoes and water with you. The Low Tatras are not only about famous names - even less visited places like Poludnica can surprise you.
Poludnica is less well-known, but all the more peaceful. From the top you will see Liptov like the palm of your hand - without crowds and hustle and bustle. It is located in the northern part of the Low Tatras, near the Demänovská Valley. It is an ideal destination for those looking for peace, quiet and less frequented routes. The climb to Poludnica offers beautiful forest trails, interesting rock formations and at the top an exceptional view of the Liptov Basin, the West Tatras and part of the High Tatras. The hike is of medium difficulty and can be done even by more fit children.
For those who want to go a little further, the Tatranská magistrála is an ideal destination - the legendary red route that stretches across the entire High Tatras. The hiking route leads from Podbanské through Štrbské Pleso, Popradské Pleso, Hrebienok to the Tatranská Kotlina. Each part of the magistrála offers its own unique character, whether it is views, waterfalls or historic cottages.
The main route is suitable for everyone who can handle a longer hike in the High Tatras – from families to experienced hikers. Even less experienced hikers can try the main route – just choose a shorter section that suits them. The total length of the main route is an impressive 72 kilometers. Don’t forget to bring your cameras – you’ll need them. For hikers, the main route is the perfect combination of natural beauty, historic huts and accessibility – if you don’t dare to do the entire route, you can always easily return to the starting point. It is an ideal choice for a multi-day hike or a shorter one-day trip.
The Tatras are also accessible to families with children. Many of the routes are designed to be safe, engaging and at the same time interesting for the little ones. There are benches, information boards and interactive elements. It is crucial for parents to be able to relax and at the same time offer their children an experience that will excite them. In the region you will find routes that combine the beauty of nature, easy terrain and the opportunity to have fun along the way.
Family hiking in the Tatras is ideal during spring and summer, when the trails turn into green corridors and children can discover different types of flowers and butterflies. Autumn offers breathtaking colors and peaceful trails. In winter, some routes turn into groomed paths suitable for walks with bobsleighs or sleds, which is a great experience for the little ones.
The Lúčky viewpoint is an excellent choice for an easy, approximately hour-long trip that will not burden you and will also please you. It is located near the Demänovská Valley and offers an ideal destination for families with small children, seniors or people who want to enjoy nature without having to reach the bottom of their strength. The route leads through the forest, so children will definitely be interested in observing animal tracks, collecting pine cones and other fruits, and discovering everything that the secrets of the forest have to offer.
During the trip, partial views of the Low Tatras and the Liptov Basin open up, culminating in a panoramic view from the lookout at the end of the trip. The trip lasts about an hour, which makes it ideal for a morning or early evening walk. The route can also be completed with a baby carrier or with children's hiking equipment. In the summer months, the surroundings are full of life and singing birds. At the end, there is a small bench with a view that is guaranteed to please the whole family.
Cable cars in the High Tatras offer a unique way to introduce children to the high mountain environment without the need for a long and difficult climb. One of the most popular options is the cable car to Hrebienok, where children can discover the Studenovodské waterfalls, admire chamois or play on thematic playgrounds. In winter, Hrebienok is home to the famous Tatra Ice Dome, which is a great experience not only for children.
Another great option is to take the cable car to Skalnaté pleso. From there you can go on a short and safe ridge walk, which is also suitable for smaller children. Along the way, you can observe marmots, admire the views of Poprad and, in good weather, even Poland. Skalnaté pleso also has a botanical garden and interactive exhibits that will interest even curious children.
