Lúčanský and Brankovský waterfalls are both accessible from Ružomberok, offering an easy walk and rewarding you with beautiful natural scenery. They can be reached from Demänová Resort in less than 40 minutes, making them a perfect option for a half-day program with children.
The Lúčany Waterfall is one of the most beautiful and at the same time most accessible waterfalls in Liptov. It can be found right in the village of Lúčky and thanks to its unique travertine structure it is a national natural monument. The short route, beautiful surroundings and small lake make this place a popular destination for families with children staying in the region, for example in Demänová Resort, which is an ideal starting point for similar easy trips.
There are several smaller parking lots right next to the waterfall. The most frequently used is the parking lot at the Lúčky spa, from where it is only a few minutes walk to the waterfall. Parking is usually easy even in high season.
The most photogenic spot at the Lúčanský waterfall is undoubtedly the wooden bridge, from which you can take iconic photos with the entire waterfall in the background. Great shots can also be taken at the lower pond, where the water surface acts as a natural mirror and beautifully reflects the travertine walls and the falling water. If you want more detailed and creative shots, it is worth going out onto the side trail, which offers a close-up view of the waterfall and reveals its structure from an unconventional angle. The best photos here are taken in the morning or approximately one to two hours before sunset, when the place has the softest light.
The walk from the parking lot only takes a few minutes, and the place itself will naturally keep you there longer. Children love to explore the surroundings, and a moment of peace by the lake is soothing for adults too. This way, the whole trip can be a short and pleasant stop that won't burden anyone in the family.
Brankovský waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Low Tatras and with its almost 55 meters it looks very impressive at first glance. The water here falls down a high rock wall hidden in the forest, which makes this location a pleasant place in a quiet environment. The route to the waterfall is slightly longer than at Lúčanský waterfall.
The path to it starts at Podsuchá and leads along the green tourist trail through the forest, which offers a pleasant environment throughout the year. Even less fit tourists can handle the route. The climb is moderate and the route is wide enough. The whole trip there and back will take you about 45 to 60 minutes.
The easiest way is to park at the Koliba u Dobrého Pastiera, where there is a large parking lot. From there, just follow the tourist sign and after a few minutes you will find yourself in a peaceful forest.
The trail is suitable for most children from around four to five years old, especially if they are used to short trips in the forest. Children are usually excited by the path itself - they pass by rocks, bridges and a stream, which makes the trip a little adventure. However, the terrain is not suitable for strollers.
If you are looking for a quick and completely undemanding trip that you can do even with the little ones, Lúčanský waterfall is an ideal choice. It is located right in the village, the path to it is short and the result is immediate – a beautiful waterfall, a lake and the opportunity to take nice photos without a long walk.
Brankov Waterfall is great for families who want to spend a little more time in nature and don't mind a short forest climb. The reward is a majestic waterfall hidden in the silence of the forest, which seems much wilder than Lúčanský.
If you like photography, both waterfalls offer a number of nice spots that are worth taking advantage of. Lúčanský waterfall is ideal for beautiful, bright and very clear shots due to its accessibility. The most common photo spot is the wooden bridge that creates a natural frame for the waterfall and its travertine wall. Another popular spot is the small lake. If you take the side trail, you will get a close-up view that captures the structure of the travertines and the water flows themselves.
The route to the Brankovo Waterfall has the charm of a forest environment. During the walk, you will come across sections that look very natural. A path lined with trees, narrow places near the rocks or small bridges over the stream. The waterfall itself offers the most photogenic view directly from the foot of the rock wall. The forest creates a pleasant background and, in combination with the water, provides very harmonious shots. Photos here stand out best in the morning light, when the sun shines through the trees, but does not yet create sharp contrasts.
When are the waterfalls most beautiful?
The highest water flow occurs in spring and days after heavy rains, when both waterfalls appear more lively and are more clearly visible from afar. During the summer, the surroundings are pleasantly shady, so the trip is a good way to relax from the heat. Autumn brings beautiful colors and pleasant weather. Winter is also an interesting time, when the Lúčanský waterfall can freeze in places and form ice formations.
Although these are easy hikes, when moving around the water, it is a good idea to be careful of wet stones and wooden surfaces, which can be slippery. In the case of Brankov Waterfall, the trail can be slightly muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes with good foothold are recommended. At Lúčanský Waterfall, you should expect water mist near the pond, where the terrain is naturally wetter.
For a trip to the waterfalls, it is worth packing comfortable sports shoes, water and a small snack so that you can get some exercise on the spot. Don't forget a change of clothes, especially if the children will be playing near the water or in the forest. During the summer months, it is practical to have insect repellent with you and it is always a good idea to think about a sufficiently charged mobile phone or power bank.

You can also reach the Lúčanský waterfall with a stroller, as the path is short, flat and accessible. However, we do not recommend a stroller for the Brankov waterfall, as the route leads through forest terrain, which is uneven in places and unsuitable for pushing a stroller.
Swimming at the waterfalls is not allowed, as both locations are located in a protected area. However, at the Lúčanský waterfall, you can comfortably sit by the pond and enjoy the proximity of the falling water, which is very refreshing, especially on hot days.
