Many of them can also be used in winter and enjoy a day full of winter nature and snowy views. Winter hiking? Central Slovakia and the Liptov region offer dozens of options. There are the Veľká Fatra, the Low Tatras, the High Tatras and the Choč Mountains. We have looked at the seven most interesting hiking trails that you can take in these areas even in winter. Here is a list of them, more information can be found below in the blog.

Are you imagining a summit hike for families with children with minimal climbing? Try Radičiná Hill. The starting point is the Rybárpole part of Ružomberok, from where you will cross the farm forest to Dubovské lúky. Here, in addition to the old haylofts, you will be enchanted by the views of the majestic Veľký Choč. The route continues with a steeper climb to a clearing with a fireplace. From here, it is only a short distance to the summit, where a wooden bridge with a view of Liptovská Mara awaits you.
The walking route, ideal for families with children, starts in the Ľupčianská valley and ends at the modern Magurka cottage with a restaurant and accommodation. Thanks to the asphalt road, the cottage is also accessible by car, but it offers the possibility of a pleasant walk with minimal elevation gain, ideal even for the smallest. Magurka is located in a former mining settlement in the heart of the Low Tatras nature with views of the peaks of Ďurková and Chabenec.
Do you know the name of the only high-altitude chalet in the Western Tatras? Yes, it is the Žiarska chalet. It is located in the central part of the Žiarska valley, from its mouth you can get there by walking trail in less than two hours. The nature trail is ideal for families with children, but also seniors, less able tourists or even cyclists. The route leads along an asphalt road, but an older path through the forest is also a popular alternative. Children will especially enjoy a stop in a small cave called Medvedia štôlňa. Žiarska chalet is a popular starting point for several hikes in the Baníkov and Baranec areas, after a walk you can have a snack and even sleep over.
In the lap of the magical natural scenery of the Western Tatras is the Chata pod Náružím, surrounded by Ostrý, Sivý vrch, Babka and Veľká kopá. The route to this place is described as a high-altitude hike and begins at the beginning of the Bobrovecká valley near the Bobrovecká limestone quarry, where you will find a free parking lot. Following the blue mark, you will reach the footpath past the calvary and then along the forest path to the romantic cottage, where you can have refreshments and spend the night.
A circular hike with a gentle climb and twelve information panels – that is the Demänovská Valley nature trail. It starts in the Jasná recreation area near Vrbické pleso and leads past the Mikulášská chata, the Zadná voda stream through Brhliská, after which it begins to climb steeply. The trail takes you through serpentines to several Chopok slopes and ends your admiring of natural beauty at the Lúčky clearing cottage. There is free parking at the starting point of the hike, and you can also easily get here by bus from Liptovský Mikuláš.
Pleasant winter hiking in winter Slovakia? Poludnica Hill is also worth a try. You can start a charming high-altitude hike to this place in Liptovský Ján, where this route ends. Following the green mark, you will start a steep climb along two slopes, after which the first magical views will begin to appear. You will continue through Predná Poludnica and later along the cave where Slovak Jews hid during World War II. From there, it is only a short distance to the top of the hill, where a panoramic view of the entire Liptov region awaits you.
Do you love panoramic views of all directions? Do you want to have Liptov at your fingertips? Choose Veľký Choč. There are several paths leading to this mountain, we recommend the one that starts in the village of Likavka and ends in Lúčky. This summit high-altitude hike is ideal for lovers of winter hiking and is unique in that it passes by the Likavka Castle, which is definitely worth a visit. The route is rugged, you can look forward to mountain roads and meadows, the most demanding is especially the final part with the ascent to the summit and the subsequent descent.
In addition to hiking trails, Liptov offers a variety of additional winter experiences - ice rinks, toboggan runs, and picturesque waterfalls. Don't forget to visit the lookout towers, often covered in snow, which offer beautiful panoramas. Every trip can be a combination of exercise, fun, and magical snowy scenery.
