The Low Tatras ridge, stretching for almost 100 kilometers, is one of the most breathtaking mountain scenery in Slovakia. It offers rocky peaks, endless grassy ridges, deep karst valleys and breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Liptov, Horehronie and the neighboring High Tatras. Whether you are an experienced alpine hiker or looking for a relaxing hike with your family, hiking in the Low Tatras has something to offer every category of tourist.
We have hiked the well-known and lesser-known peaks of the Low Tatras for you and prepared a complete guide to the most beautiful routes. Demänová Resort will serve as an ideal base for your mountain expeditions, from where you are literally just a stone's throw away from the main hiking trails.
While the High Tatras attract with their rocky peaks, the Low Tatras will enchant you with their long ridges, open spaces and a huge variety of hiking trails. The biggest attraction of the mountain range is the legendary Low Tatras ridge, but equally enchanting are the ascents from the valleys to individual dominants.
The mountainous terrain here will test your fitness, but it will reward you with scenery that is constantly changing. After a whole day of pedaling along stony paths with a thousand vertical meters in your legs, your muscles require immediate care. In order to be able to continue exploring without pain the next day, post-hiking regeneration is an important step. That is why more and more tourists are choosing accommodation that includes a modern wellness center for quick recovery.
The central part of the mountain range, also known as the Ďumbierske Tatry, hides the highest and most famous peaks. It is here that you will experience the most beautiful mountain climbs.
Majestic Ďumbier (2,043 m above sea level) is the highest peak of the entire mountain range. Its northern walls fall into the Demänovská Valley in steep rocky gullies, while the southern slopes are more gentle and grassy. At the top, you will be greeted by a massive wooden double cross and a circular view that, with good visibility, extends from Oravská Magura to the Slovenské rudohorie.
The second highest peak of the Low Tatras, Chopok (2,024 m above sea level), is a popular destination throughout the year. Thanks to the modern cable car from the Jasná resort, it has become accessible to families with children, seniors, and less able tourists. From the final cable car station at Rotunda, it is only about a 15-minute walk to the very top along a rocky path.
If you prefer the silence of nature, the singing of birds, and routes where you will meet only a minimum of tourists throughout the day, the side slopes of the Low Tatras hide true treasures.
Dominant limestone massif Krakova hoľa (1,752 m above sea level) rises directly above the mouth of the Demänovská Valley. This mountain is known for its extensive karst system with numerous ravines and caves, which are not accessible to the public. The peak itself offers an indescribable, almost perpendicular view of the valley and the entire Jasná ridge.
Fire pit (1,535 m above sea level) lies in a side ridge above the Jánská Valley. This massive limestone hill also hides a unique natural formation - the famous rock window (approx. 12-meter-high rock gate), which dominates the entire massif and is located just below the summit plateau.
It is not worth underestimating the mountain environment of the Low Tatras. The weather on the ridge can change within tens of minutes. Therefore, follow these rules before each climb:
After a day of climbing the peaks of the Low Tatras, your body deserves the perfect reward. Lactic acid in stiff muscles and tired joints need regeneration, which will help you avoid pain and muscle soreness.
Demänová Resort creates the perfect environment for tourists:
Choose your favorite peaks of the Low Tatras, put on your hiking boots and discover the beauty of Slovak nature from a base where we will take care of your comfort at the highest level.
Yes. There is a bus stop a few meters from the resort, from which the local bus and winter ski bus will take you directly to Demänovská Valley, to the caves and to Biela Púť (Jasná) without changing.
The climb to Chopok using the cable car from Jasná is also ideal for small children and seniors. The routes to Ďumbier, Krakova hola or Ohnište are all-day mountain hikes suitable for older children and tourists in good condition.
Unlike the High Tatras, where most of the high mountain trails are closed in winter, the main dominants of the Low Tatras (Chopok, Ďumbier) and the access trails from Jasná are open year-round. However, selected sections of the ridge are subject to seasonal closures for nature conservation reasons, so we recommend checking the current NAPANT Visitor Regulations and the conditions of the Fire Department before climbing.
