Vlkolínec is also known in Japan! We are not surprised. This traditional settlement, nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Veľká Fatra, attracts attention far beyond the borders of Slovakia.
Vlkolínec is a lively foothill village. It has been a monument reserve since 1977 and since 1993 it can also be found on UNESCO World Heritage List. The reason for its inclusion in the list was the fact that a set of 45 original peasant houses, almost all of which date from the 19th century, have been preserved in the settlement. They are characterized by a typical floor plan with 3 rooms and a gabled shingle roof. The houses have brick foundations, do not have cellars, are wooden and the floors are partly made of rammed earth. Most of the houses are painted with white lime paint. The only brick building in the settlement is the church.
Vlkolínec is unique in the world. With its preserved original architecture, it offers an authentic glimpse into the past. It will also amaze you with its beautiful views and magical atmosphere, where time seems to have stood still. Of course, the number of people you will meet here also depends on when you visit Vlkolínec.
Another interesting thing about Vlkolínec is that it is not an open-air museum, i.e. an artificially created museum. People still live in some of the houses. Mostly cottagers, but there are also adventurers or old settlers who live here year-round.
One of the oldest caves in Europe, discovered in 1299, it is known for its beauty, size, and rich fauna. The first visitors came here at the end of the 19th century. Perhaps because of its majesty, people in the past believed that the cave was home to mythical creatures and dangerous dragons. That is why it was called Dragon's cave.
The Demänovská Ice Cave consists of spacious corridors and domes, spread over three cave levels. Although you won't find any ice decorations in it at the moment, it's still worth seeing.
However, do not plan a trip to the Demänovská Ice Cave for Monday, as it is usually closed then.
