Hiking in Liptov in winter: Everything about winter closure in NAPANT and open routes

Tourists on the winter trails of the Low Tatras

Snow-covered ridges, crystal-clear frosty air and the silence of snowy forests make northern Slovakia a fairy-tale landscape in the cold months. Liptov attracts not only downhill skiing enthusiasts in winter, but also an increasing number of tourists who want to discover the frozen beauty of the Low Tatras on foot. Winter hiking in Liptov has its own indescribable charm, whether you are looking for an adrenaline-pumping ridge crossing with views of the snowy Liptov Basin, or you long for a peaceful family walk through a snowy valley.

However, the mountain environment changes its rules in winter. Snow cover, shortened days and harsher climatic conditions require not only quality equipment, but also respect for nature. In the Low Tatras National Park (NAPANT), different rules apply than in the neighboring High Tatras, which often leads to misunderstandings among tourists.

What restrictions does the winter closure in the Low Tatras bring, where can you go without fear, and how can you treat yourself to well-deserved comfort after returning from a freezing hike? The ideal starting point for your winter adventures is Demänová Resort, from where you can literally jump onto open hiking trails and ski slopes.

How does the winter closure in the Low Tatras (NAPANT) work?

There is a common myth among visitors to the Slovak mountains that all high-altitude trails in the Tatras are strictly closed in winter. This misconception stems from the rules in force in the High Tatras (TANAP), where most trails above mountain huts are closed throughout the winter. However, the situation is different in the Low Tatras National Park.

The rules set out in the NAPANT Visitor Regulations sensitively take into account the specifics of the local terrain. Most of the main marked trails and iconic routes remain open during the winter months, but with some important exceptions and strict rules that every visitor must follow.

When is the closure in effect and which sections are closed for nature conservation purposes?

The secondary goal of the winter movement restrictions is not to complicate the lives of tourists, but to protect wildlife in its most vulnerable period. The winter closure in the Low Tatras applies mainly to specific nature reserves, nesting grounds of rare birds of prey and wintering grounds of the High Tatras chamois and marmot.

  • Duration of restrictions: Seasonal closures of selected trails usually apply from November 1 (in some sections from November 15) until June 30 of the following year.
  • Which sections are closed: These are primarily secondary ridge trails, sensitive karst valleys and selected ascent routes leading through protected areas with the highest level of protection (e.g. steep gullies and upper parts of valleys, where there is also an increased avalanche danger).
  • Movement exclusively on marked routes: In winter, it is extremely important not to stray from the marked trail. In deep snow, a frightened animal uses up a huge amount of vital energy, which can be fatal for it in freezing conditions.
  • Terrain orientation: On open ridge routes in winter, we orient ourselves according to winter pole markings. If the poles are lost in fog or a storm, it is necessary to turn around and return safely.

Therefore, before each hike, always check the current warnings and the exact wording of the visiting rules on the official websites of NAPANT or the Mountain Rescue Service.

Year-round accessible hiking trails around Demänová

The good news for all lovers of winter hiking is that the surroundings of Demänovská Valley offer a number of beautiful trails that are accessible all year round. The only condition is, of course, favorable weather and appropriate winter equipment.

Climbing Chopok and Ďumbier for experienced tourists

The main ridge of the Low Tatras is one of the most beautiful tourist experiences in Slovakia in winter. The dominant features of the mountain range – Chopok (2,024 m above sea level) a Ďumbier (2,043 m above sea level) – are also available in the winter months.

The route from Demänovská dolina to Chopok will test your fitness, but the reward is magnificent panoramic views of the snowy Tatras, Veľká Fatra and Liptovská Mara. If you want to shorten the ascent or are only planning a ridge crossing between Chopok and Chata MR Štefánik pod Ďumbierom, you can use the cable car from Jasná. The ridge route is marked with winter pole markings. However, be prepared for the weather on the ridge to be very windy and cold, so don't underestimate good quality clothing.

Easy winter circuits in the valley and around Vrbické pleso

Are you looking for a quieter program or are you wondering where to go with children in Liptov in winter? You don't have to conquer two-thousand-meter peaks right away. Demänovská Valley hides ideal places for easy winter walks in magical snowy nature.

The unmistakable unit is the circuit around Vrbické pleso. This largest natural lake in the Low Tatras turns into a fairy-tale backdrop in winter. The frozen water surface surrounded by snow-covered spruces and the silence of the mountain valley offers an easy walk with minimal elevation, which can be easily managed by small children and active seniors. The responsibly maintained trails in the lower parts of the valley are also a great choice for families with strollers or sledges.

Safety principles and equipment for winter hiking

Winter mountains do not forgive underestimating preparation and equipment. Even a short and seemingly easy route can become dangerous in a sudden change in weather or an icy trail. The basis for a safe return is the right equipment and good planning.

Hiking crampons, layering clothing, and watching avalanche warnings

Before you head out from the warmth of the resort onto the winter trail, review this quick safety overview:

  1. Hiking cats or nesmeky: The trails in the valleys and on the ridge are often trampled and icy. High-quality anti-slip socks (non-slip) for easy walks or hiking crampons for higher routes are mandatory equipment to prevent dangerous falls.
  2. Hiking sticks: Winter hiking poles with wider snow cups will provide you with the necessary stability in deep snow and significantly relieve your joints when descending.
  3. Functional clothing layering: The basis is a three-layer system - thermal underwear to wick away sweat, a warm insulating layer (fleece or down) and a waterproof, windproof outer jacket. A spare hat, warm gloves and spare socks should never be missing from your backpack.
  4. Thermos with hot tea and energy: Drinking plenty of warm fluids will help prevent hypothermia. You can also pack energy bars or dried fruit for a quick calorie boost.
  5. Monitoring the avalanche situation and the HZS: Before setting off, always check the current avalanche warning from the Avalanche Prevention Centre on the website of the Mountain Rescue Service (hzs.sk). Have the HZS app installed on your phone and don't forget a fully charged headlamp - darkness comes around four in the afternoon in winter.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between the winter closure in the High and Low Tatras?

In the High Tatras (TANAP), a nationwide winter closure of most higher-lying trails is in effect from November 1 to June 15. In the Low Tatras (NAPANT), the main hiking trails and ridges (including Chopok and Ďumbier) remain open year-round. Only selected nature reserves and sensitive sections protected for wintering wildlife are closed.

Do I need special insurance for winter hiking in the Low Tatras?

Yes. Mountain Rescue Service intervention on mountain trails is not covered by standard health insurance. Before each hike, we recommend taking out short-term mountain insurance, which you can easily arrange online.

Is the route around Vrbické pleso safe, even if there is a lot of snow?

Yes, the circuit around Vrbické pleso lies in a valley with minimal slope and there is no avalanche danger. It is a very safe and pleasant winter walk for families with children, for which you will need good winter shoes with non-slip soles.

What to do if it is not possible to go to the ridge due to weather or strong winds?

If the weather in the high altitudes is not favorable, choose a safe program in the lower altitudes. A great alternative is a leisurely walk around Vrbické pleso, relaxation in the wellness center or winter fun right in the resort, where there is also a smaller Ski Center Demanova.
