7 tips on what to do in Liptov when it rains

Liptov is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Slovakia. With many attractions for children and adults, hiking trails, water attractions, thermal springs, caves, ski resorts and everything else, Liptov is one of the top Slovak destinations. In summer, winter, spring and summer days there is always something to do and discover.

Imagine you have a holiday planned. You have chosen your accommodation in Liptov, and the places you want to visit… But the weather is not exactly ideal. What to do when it rains in Liptov? We have 7 tips to help you enjoy your holiday in Liptov in all weathers.

1. Stanišovská cave

Stanišovská Cave is the only year-round open cave in Slovakia. It is located a short distance behind Liptovský Ján, in the Jánska valley. You can discover the magical underground here with a headlamp on your head and experienced cavers are your guides. A 45-60 minute stay in the cave, during which you will walk 177 m, is a pleasant experience for both children and adults.

Stanišovská Cave is neither the largest nor the most beautiful of the Slovak caves. But it is worth seeing. You and your children will surely remember the experience of exploring the beauty of this cave for a long time to come.

2. Hurricane Factory

If you are a lover of adrenaline, the Hurricane Factory at Aquapark Tatralandia is a unique experience that you should not miss. Are you interested in flying? Hurricane Factory can be a small taste of it. It flies in a glass chamber that has a diameter of 4.3 m and a height of up to 14 m. A one-minute stay in the chamber simulates falling out of a plane from a height of up to 4,000 m. Make your dream of flying come true.

The attraction is designed for adults, but also for children from 5 years old. If you are worried about safety, you don’t have to. At the Hurricane Factory you are supervised by experienced instructors and you will also receive a full briefing before the flight.

We’ve tried it for you: the Hurricane Factory is an experience you won’t forget. The preparation and briefing are longer than the actual flying, but the feeling in the air is indescribable. We recommend it with all ten of our hearts!

3. Aquapark Tatralandia

Aquapark Tatralandia is a place of water fun, adventure and relaxation. It is located only 2 km from Liptovský Mikuláš and a short walk from Liptovská Mara. Aquapark offers 14 swimming pools, 28 slides, fun and adrenaline attractions and a varied animation programme during the summer. You can also try surfing on wild waves or snorkelling. When it’s raining outside or the weather isn’t suitable for outdoor activities, the Tropical Paradise with 30°C and 4 indoor pools is a delight. In the Tropical Paradise, the indoor waterpark is dominated by a pirate ship, which will provide plenty of entertainment options for children. Adults may be interested in the wellness & spa area with a variety of treatments.

Our tip: If you prefer more intimate spaces, try the wellness at the Demänová Resort in Demänovo. In the new wellness centre you will find everything you need to relax your body and soul – dry sauna, steam sauna, infrared sauna, Kneipp foot bath, cooling bath, ice bath, whirlpool and teppidarium. As a bonus, you will enjoy beautiful views of the enchanting natural scenery of Liptov.

4. House upside down

Not far from Tatralandia and a short distance from Liptovský Mikuláš you will find this unusual phenomenon not only in Liptov, but also in Slovakia – a house built upside down. The building, which was created as an expression of frustration with bureaucracy, soon after its opening became a sought-after attraction in Liptov. The house is furnished – even the children’s room, which has its permanent residents, such as Snow White or Little Red Riding Hood. And although you may feel a little dizzy from seeing this attraction, a visit to the Upside Down House is definitely worth it!

5. Wooden Articular Church in Svätý Kříž

Just 14 km from Liptovský Mikuláš stands a unique evangelical church, which is one of the largest wooden buildings in Central Europe. The church in Svätý Kříž has a floor plan of 43 m and the shape of a cross. If you are familiar with wooden churches from the north-east of Slovakia, which are rather smaller in size, this one will amaze you with its majesty. The interior can accommodate almost 6,000 people. The interior is magical. The wooden baroque altar or the unique pulpit, which stands on a log foundation, catches the eye at first sight. The atmosphere of the church is truly unique, don’t miss it.

Our tip: Before visiting the church, we recommend you check the opening hours. On weekdays, the church in Holy Cross is only open to the public for 1.5 hours a day.

6. Slovak Museum of Nature Conservation and Caving

2 expositions – Karst and Caves of Slovakia and Protected Nature of Slovakia – Earth a Place for Life are spread over 4 floors of the museum from the basement to the attic. On 1400 m2 you will find interesting artefacts about caving, beauty and nature conservation. The museum also includes a relaxation area where you can watch films or just take a moment to relax and recharge your batteries. The museum organises a number of events for the public throughout the year, which can make your visit to the museum more enjoyable. And although a stay at the museum is always a bit of a different kind of fun, we definitely recommend it. And not only when it rains in Liptov.

7. Demänová resort and restaurant Pinius

Demänová resort is a new ecological resort in Demänova, a few minutes by car from Liptovský Mikuláš and Demänovská Dolina. The Demänová resort also includes the renowned Pinius restaurant, which enchants with its stylish design and exceptional cuisine.

If you are on holiday in the Liptov region and it is raining, you have all the more reason to sit in the nice restaurant with a fireplace and enjoy quality food prepared with love. Without stress and chasing.

Children can have fun in the spacious children’s play area, which is part of the Pinius restaurant. And you can enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of the restaurant in the Demänová resort.

Apropos. What to do with children when it rains? Or balls and indoor children’s playgrounds that’s for sure. One children’s centre can be found right in Liptovský Mikuláš, in the RGB Liptov shopping centre. Handy Dandy Kids Paradise is located on the 1st floor and offers everything to keep younger children especially entertained.

We also had a good experience with the Babyland indoor playground, which is part of the Baybyland Villa Betula Rezort near Liptovská Mara. On an area of 500 m2 you will find, in addition to the aforementioned balls (ball pool), a three-storey children’s maze, various labyrinths, obstacles, building blocks. Entrance to the area is not among the cheapest, but when it’s raining and parents are at a loss, it’s good to know about it. 😊

Enjoy your stay in Liptov, whatever the weather.
